This colorful, busy area derives its name from the appearance of the presence of numerous German business owners during the 1830s and 1840s. While in fact most of these businessmen were British, the travelers nicknamed the area Germantown, a designation that has never left it.
Through the years, Germantown’s reputation was associated with the presence of a co-conspirator in the Abraham Lincoln assassination. Germantown’s next distinction, however, was that of the relocation of the US Atomic Energy Commission from Washington DC to Germantown. It is now the administration complex for the US Department of Energy and headquarters for the Office of Biological and Environmental Research.
Within its identity as a bustling, growing city, Germantown is home to numerous businesses and commercial entities. Among these are Earth Networks, Hughes Network Systems and Qiagen. It also offers the SoccerPlex, sites for the DC United Open Cup Marches, Real Maryland, NCAA Conference Championships, the Discovery Cup and other major sports events.
This growth has been accompanied by the corresponding need for updated housing such as single-family dwellings, apartments and townhouses. Germantown’s Town Center is home to the BlackRock Center for the Arts. BlackRock is the sponsor for the Montgomery County’s Germantown Oktoberfest, a festival that includes traditional German music as well as rock and pop; this is Montgomery County’s largest non-profit event.
